Located in downtown Asunción, this gym provided us with one of the best experiences of our lives. We spent two weeks training on their mats and discovered several reasons why this facility stands out from the rest.

First and foremost, the members, staff, and coaches at Legion Academy (Gracie Barra) cultivate an incredibly friendly environment. Because we arrived as tourists, the locals immediately took the initiative to welcome us.
Furthermore, instead of staying in their own circles, students proactively introduced themselves and shook our hands to show respect.
2. Fully Equipped Facilities
In addition to the high-level grappling, the academy offers a complete fitness experience. Members do not just attend Jiu-Jitsu classes; they also utilize a dedicated weight room for strength and conditioning.
Moreover, the facility includes a separate striking room equipped with punching bags for those looking to improve their stand-up game.
3. Legion Jiu-Jitsu : Culture of Discipline and Respect
Legion strictly upholds the traditions of the “gentle art.” At the start of every class, students line up to bow to the instructor and the portrait of Helio Gracie. Although most BJJ gyms follow this protocol, the students here truly internalize these values.
Consequently, they apply this discipline not only to their training but throughout their daily lives.
4. Well-Structured Programming of Legion Jiu-Jitsu
During our stay, we attended the 6:00 PM sessions from Monday through Friday. After two weeks, we found the curriculum exceptionally organized for both Gi and No-Gi classes.
The sessions typically follow a strategic flow:
Warm-up: Classes begin with stretching or laps to prepare the body.
Stand-up: Students always start with takedown techniques before hitting the floor.
Groundwork: The instructor transitions into specific technical drilling.
Live Rolling: Finally, the class concludes with live sparring where students apply their skills in real-time.
5. Diverse Technical Styles
During the rolling sessions, you will face a wide variety of skill levels and styles. Because the student body is so diverse, you can test your game against elite guard players, sweepers, back-takers, and leg-lock specialists.
This variety ensures that every round challenges your versatility.
6. High-Level Instruction Across All Tiers
The curriculum is clearly partitioned into Fundamentals and Advanced classes.
Although we stayed in the advanced sessions, the quality of the “Beginner” program was evident; the white belts we rolled with displayed a technical proficiency and composure that spoke volumes about the quality of the coaching they receive.
7. World-Class Black Belt Instruction
The black belts at Legion possess a vast wealth of knowledge and unique personal styles. When you roll with them, you quickly notice their well-rounded abilities and successful high-percentage techniques.
Most importantly, these instructors act as true mentors; during rounds, they share defensive tips and submission escapes to help you improve immediately.
